Cholesterol Lowering Supplements

What is the purpose of cholesterol lowering supplements?  Do you know what your cholesterol level is? Along with heart rates and blood pressure, cholesterol levels seem to be one of the most commonly monitored vital signs in modern times.

The treatment of high cholesterol levels has skyrocketed, with various products, such as cholesterol lowering supplements becoming available. This includes products that contain Omega-3. What exactly is Omega-3, which items contain it, and can it truly lower cholesterol?

Omega-3 fatty acids (including EPA and DHA) are contained in fish oil. Meanwhile, fish oil originates from fatty fishes’ tissues. Fatty fishes include tuna and salmon, while fishes with fish oil include sardines and (freshwater) trout.

Studies have revealed that fish oil and Omega-3 can provide various health benefits. Fish oil can lower your blood pressure. Fish oil can reduce your chance of suffering a heart attack. Fish oil can improve your overall eye health and reduce your risk of acquiring Dry Eye Syndrome (DES).

According to various studies, solid proof exists that fish oil and Omega-3 can successfully aid in lowering and regulating cholesterol levels. Cholesterol is a waxy substance that human livers produce and that is located in certain foods. While cholesterol has earned negative connotations, it has important functions for humans:

* To produce Vitamin D
* To construct cell walls
* To produce bile salts (for digesting fat)
* To produce certain hormones

In theory your body itself produces a sufficient amount of cholesterol. Then what is the purpose of cholesterol lowering supplements? The problem is that it is nearly impossible to avoid cholesterol in foods, as several of them contain the substance. Furthermore, consuming too much bad cholesterol can result in grave medical conditions, such as heart disease.

While several techniques can help to reduce cholesterol levels, one of the most promising and effective ones, is the consumption of Omega-3 fatty acids that is contained in sources such as fish oils. While human bodies require Omega-3, they do produce it. Thus, you can only obtain it through foods.

Various studies have shown that those who consume certain types of diets have higher HDL or “good” cholesterol levels. For instance, those who eat a “Mediterranean-style” diet usually have more good cholesterol than those who eat “Western-style” meals. Fatty fish and nuts, outstanding sources of Omega-3, are both frequently present in Mediterranean-style meals.

Similarly, Inuit Eskimos also eat a high amount of fatty fish, and also tend to have high levels of good cholesterol.

How about “bad” cholesterol? Various studies have also indicated that Omega-3 and fatty fish are also effective in reducing “bad” levels of cholesterol (LDL) in people. This is the cholesterol that is found in foods such as bacon double cheeseburgers, and which has been getting a lot of attention recently. The bottom line is that Omega-3 succeeds in lowering bad cholesterol levels, and in increasing good cholesterol levels.

“Bad” cholesterol can have quite a detrimental effect on your health. Fortunately, treatments such as cholesterol lowering supplements can boost levels of the helpful type and reduce levels of the harmful type.
