Fish Oil Side Effects

Fish Oil Side EffectsAre there any fish oil side effects?

The consumption of fish oil has gained popularity over the years since the Omega-3 fatty acids caught the attention of researchers 20 years ago. It was in the 1980’s that low rates of heart diseases were noted despite the individuals’ high-fat diets that was rich in fish.

There are many benefits of fish oil to the body. Because Omega-3 fatty acids are termed to be polyunsaturated fats, it lowers blood pressure, which is very helpful to people who are at risk for heart diseases. It also helps in the blood’s circulation by making the blood thinner, preventing clots that could lead to heart attacks. According to some studies, fish oil is even already considered as a treatment for depression. But despite these benefits, are there fish oil side effects?

The usual side effects of fish oil are the fishy aftertaste and the “fishy” burp. However, the burping is brought about by improper storage of the fish oil supplement. This makes it rancid. Rancidity alters the flavor and smell of the supplement, not to mention, diminishes its nutritional value. For you to avoid rancidity, try putting the capsules in the freezer because they are extremely susceptible to damage from heat, light and oxygen. This way, it will not dissolve in the stomach; instead, it will go straight to the intestines.

On the other hand, some experience gastrointestinal side effects such as stomach upset, diarrhea, acid reflux, heart burn or indigestion during the course of their consumption. Some also experience abdominal bloating and abdominal pain. These fish oil side effects, though; can be minimized if supplements are taken with meals. Also, it is essential to start with small doses and to continue on by gradually increasing it, that is, if it is necessary or if it is prescribed by your physician. Sometimes, this side effect is brought about by impure fish oil components. This is risky because not only will the individual experience gastrointestinal side effects but will possibly be poisoned by contaminants.

Because fish oil is proven to help in blood thinning and the prevention of blood clots, one of the side effects that may arise from this are nosebleed, blood in the urine and the increased risk of hemorrhagic stroke or the bleeding in the brain. Too much intake would lead to another fish oil side effect that leads to the aggregation of platelets that will cause an individual to bleed easily and bleed longer. Too much blood pressure reduction can also result from intakes that are more than what is required.

The consumption of fish oil can also bring side effects from chemical interactions with drugs or food like aspirin and olive oil. In addition, to those who have diabetes, fish oil can raise the blood sugar but this does not last.

Apparently, if an individual is taking the right dosage of fish oil pills, the side effects rarely surface. That is why, it is very important to consult a doctor before taking high doses.
